BI and ask-your-data tools:
the alternatives, compared
Classic BI builds dashboards; the newer tools answer a question typed in plain language. The difference that matters is whether that answer is computed from definitions you trust.
What to look for
- Whether plain-language questions run against a semantic layer — metrics defined once — or against raw tables an AI guesses at.
- Native connectors for the databases you actually run.
- Who can see what: per-source access, read-only connections, and dashboards shared without handing over the database.
- Whether AI agents and other tools can query the same model, not just people in the dashboard.

Frequently asked questions
It can when the questions run against a semantic model — measures, dimensions and joins defined once — rather than raw tables. Read-only connections and row limits on every query keep it from changing or dumping data.
Metabase, Apache Superset, Redash, Grafana and Lightdash are open source, among others marked on the list. 2pm.space is a hosted service.
Not to ask questions. For the queries you want to write by hand, 2pm.space has SQL Lab on the same connection, and its results can be charted and pinned to a board.
